Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) can start at any time during pregnancy; however, it usually begins between 14 and 30 weeks of pregnancy. As every pregnancy is different, so too are the causes and symptoms of pelvic girdle pain, which affect when and if PGP will occur. Pelvic girdle pain may start suddenly or gradually, and its intensity may fluctuate over time. In some women, the pain occurs in waves, whereas in others, it may be constant.

Managing urinary incontinence in the long term involves a gradual process that allows your body to adjust to new bladder habits and regain strength in the pelvic muscles. With consistent pelvic floor physiotherapy exercises and changes to your lifestyle, you can regain control of your bladder and resume activities without worry.

  • In most cases, pelvic girdle pain does not make labour worse and women can still have a vaginal birth when they receive the proper care. In saying this, some birthing positions may be more comfortable for women with PGP than others.

With the help of your pelvic health physio, practice different birthing positions during your pregnancy to determine which ones are more comfortable for you. You may find lying on your side, kneeling on all fours, in a forward lean position, or in a water birth to be more comfortable and alleviate some PGP symptoms. You can record these positions in your birth plan for your midwife’s, obstetrician’s, nurse’s, or doctor's knowledge.

  • Symptoms of pelvic girdle pain can last for three to eight months after giving birth. If you have two or more types of pain during pregnancy, the chances of having sustained pain postpartum are higher. This is why it’s crucial to seek professional help when pain occurs during pregnancy, so we can take preventative measures and stop it from worsening as the baby gets heavier.

After your baby is born, your body will gradually stop producing relaxin, which tightens your ligaments again and prevents the joints from moving as much. Between the pelvic girdle bone becoming more stabilised and the extra pregnancy weight lessening, the bone will not be under as much pressure and changes, eventually causing pain to alleviate.

To help manage and reduce postpartum pelvic pain, start exercising appropriately to help build muscle bulk and strength around the pelvis. This process should be monitored by a physiotherapist to ensure the exercises are therapeutic and effective. Your physiotherapist will provide exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, techniques to relax your pelvic area, and other necessary methods to ease your pain effectively.

    • Frequent interruptions in your sleep due to an urge to urinate

    • A need to urinate frequently during the day, often minutes in between visits to the toilet

Urine leakage can vary from a few drops to a large amount. If you experience one or more of the above symptoms, get in touch with our incontinence clinic in Sydney. Early intervention can increase the effectiveness of bladder incontinence treatment.
