Pregnancy physiotherapist in Sydney

Pregnancy physiotherapy services

Pregnancy brings about significant changes in your body, which can result in pain, discomfort and reduced mobility. Our pregnancy physiotherapists are here to support you through every stage of your pregnancy and postpartum journey, offering safe and effective treatments specifically for you.

What is pregnancy physiotherapy?

Pregnancy physiotherapy focuses on managing the physical challenges associated with pregnancy, which differs from general physiotherapy. The body undergoes changes like increased pressure on the joints, muscles and pelvic floor, which can lead to discomfort or pain. A pregnancy physiotherapist can help you navigate these changes, providing relief and preparing your body for childbirth and postpartum recovery.

Papaya Clinic will conduct an initial consultation to assess your current stage of pregnancy, understand your symptoms, medical history, and address any concerns you may have, ensuring we provide holistic, supportive care tailored to your needs. During your initial consultation, we will provide a customised treatment plan, which may involve our other services, such as pelvic health physio, musculoskeletal physiotherapy, acupuncture, and exercise and pilates sessions.

What does a pregnancy physiotherapist do?

A pregnancy physiotherapist helps manage physical discomforts related to pregnancy by offering treatments tailored to your body’s needs. They can treat pain, improve mobility and guide you through safe exercises to prepare for childbirth and postpartum recovery.

Pregnancy can place stress on various parts of your body, leading to issues that our experienced team can help treat. Some common concerns include:

  • Low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, sciatica and hip discomfort

  • Postural changes that cause muscle imbalances and tension

  • Urinary incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction

  • Labour preparation, including strengthening pelvic muscles and teaching effective breathing techniques for delivery

  • Postpartum recovery, such as rehabilitating abdominal muscles and managing post-birth pain

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, working with a physiotherapist for pregnancy can improve your quality of life, allowing you to enjoy your pregnancy without unnecessary pain or discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a pregnancy physiotherapist?

It’s recommended that you see a pregnancy physiotherapist in the first trimester is recommended - it will ensure that you have the tools to manage any discomfort, maintain strength, and help prepare your body for childbirth. Seeing a pregnancy physiotherapist sooner rather than later can help effectively address any physical issues and lay a strong foundation for your pregnancy. However, consulting a physiotherapist at any stage of your pregnancy is beneficial for preventing issues, treating conditions, and learning about labour and birthing positions.

What can I expect during my first visit?

During your first visit, our pregnancy physiotherapists will conduct an in-depth assessment of your health, read through your medical history, identify symptoms, and discuss any concerns you might have. Pregnancy can be scary! Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where we can discuss all of the weird and wonderful symptoms and help alleviate any discomfort or concerns.

Is Medicare or private health fund rebate available for pregnancy physiotherapy?

Yes, pregnancy physiotherapy can be claimed on both Medicare and private health funds. You can claim up to five sessions of Physiotherapy consultations on Medicare if you have a current copy of your Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) from your GP before your first consultation. We accept all private health fund cards for our pregnancy physiotherapy services. Please note that the private health rebate may vary depending on your insurance provider and package.

How often should I attend pregnancy physiotherapy sessions?

The frequency of your physiotherapy sessions will depend on your individual needs and conditions; however, a weekly session typically provides the required benefits for most women. After your initial consultation, your physiotherapist will create a tailored treatment plan that suits your specific needs and lifestyle.
