What is Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)?

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a combination of physical and emotional symptoms that occur in the last week of the luteal phase (one to two weeks before menstruation). Symptoms of PMS typically ease within four days after menstruation starts.

According to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), PMS affects 80% of Australian women. Generally, women experience one or two PMS symptoms in the lead-up to their period. Physical PMS symptoms can include cramps in the pelvic area, tender and/or swollen breasts, bloating, acne, poor sleep, appetite changes, digestive issues (such as constipation or diarrhoea), and headaches. Emotional PMS symptoms can include increased anxiety, sadness, lethargy, trouble with concentration, brain fog, irritability, low libido, and mood swings.

The exact cause of PMS is unknown; however, it can be linked to the changes in hormone levels during the time before menstruation. The levels of hormones change during the luteal and menstrual cycle. Some women are more sensitive to these changes than others, leading to PMS symptoms.

What is premenstrual syndrome?

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is diagnosed when emotional and mood-related PMS symptoms are severe. According to the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), PMDD affects 5% to 10% of women in Australia. While less common than PMS, PMDD can negatively impact a person’s professional and personal life.

Symptoms of PMDD can include:

  • Depressive episodes

  • Sadness or hopelessness

  • Increased anxiety

  • Intense mood swings

  • Self-critical

  • Irritability and anger

  • Loss of interest in normal activities

  • Problems with concentration and memory

  • Lack of energy

  • Changes in appetite

  • Issues with falling asleep or excessive sleeping

1

Initial Consultation

Your initial consultation will be a chance for you to voice your concerns, symptoms, and goals for seeing our clinic. Our women’s health specialists will go through your medical history, health background, and current lifestyle so that we can approach your PMS and PMDD treatment holistically and personally.

Physical & Mental Assessment

To determine the extent of PMS or PMDD symptoms, we will evaluate your health history and conduct a physical and pelvic exam. Our women’s health physios specialise in pelvic health and can identify if any issues in the pelvic area are contributing to your PMS or PMDD symptoms. We will also evaluate your mental health, and may ask that you keep a journal of your symptoms to see any patterns.
