What is Clinical Nutrition?
Clinical nutrition is the study and practice of evidence-based nutrition to support, manage, and prevent disease, grounded in the relationship between what we eat, how our bodies metabolise food, and our overall health. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, clinical nutritionists provide genuinely personalised care, drawing on health history, symptoms, and pathology to develop dietary plans that address the root cause of health concerns.
The scope of clinical nutrition is broad, spanning gut and digestive health, hormonal imbalances, autoimmune conditions, blood sugar regulation, chronic disease, and food sensitivities. Clinical nutritionists are degree-qualified allied health professionals who use scientific evidence to guide their recommendations, with a focus on food quality, nutrient density, and building a real understanding of how your individual body works. The goal is always lasting dietary change, not a short-term fix.
At Papaya, we believe nourishment should be enjoyable, not a source of anxiety. Recommendations may include dietary modification, therapeutic supplement prescription, and practical lifestyle support, however whatever we recommend needs to fit within your life style. Because if it doesn't work in practice, it simply won't work.
Our Principles
We prescribe based on clinical evidence and your individual health picture, not the latest wellness trend or one-size-fits-all protocol.
Evidence-based, never trend-based
Food is meant to be enjoyed. Our goal is to build sustainable, positive eating habits, never eliminate them.
Enjoyment, not restriction
Practical, personalised guidance that fits within your actual day-to-day, because recommendations that don't fit your life won't last.
Tailored to your life, not just your labs
Your nutritionist works alongside our naturopaths, pelvic health physios, acupuncturists and more. Seeing one is seeing all.

When to see a Clinical Nutritionist?
-
We focus on optimising your nutritional status before you conceive, supporting egg quality, cycle regularity, hormonal balance, and a healthy reproductive environment.
-
Practical, trimester-specific guidance covering key nutrients, managing nausea, food safety, and what you and your growing baby truly need to optimise healthy birth outcomes.
-
We focus on rebuilding after birth: restoring iron, energy, and nutritional reserves depleted during pregnancy and delivery, with support for breastfeeding to increase nutrient density and milk supply, and general nourishment for the fourth trimester.
-
Nutritional strategies and lifestyle interventions to support bone density, metabolic health, energy, mood, and hormonal change as your body moves through this transition.
-
Your practitioner will investigate dietary iron intake and absorption factors to uncover the root cause for your depletion, and build a plan to restore your levels, without the side effects that often come with over-the-counter supplements.
-
Addressing bloating, reflux, constipation, and digestive discomfort through evidence-based, food-first therapeutic strategies, particularly relevant during pregnancy and postpartum.
-
Supporting bone density through every life stage, from the demands of pregnancy and breastfeeding through to the bone remodelling changes of perimenopause and beyond.
-
Evidence-based nutrition support for blood sugar regulation, insulin resistance, thyroid health, and weight management, addressing root cause alongside symptom management.
What to expect when working with a Clinical Nutritionist?
1. COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH ASSESSMENT
Your first consultation is all about understanding you. We explore your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, pathology results, dietary intake and goals to build a complete picture of where you are and where you want to be. This forms the foundation of your personalised plan.
2. PERSONALISED DIETARY PLAN
A food-first nutritional medicine program built around real, enjoyable food. Your practitioner will provide tailored dietary advice to support gut health, nervous system, and energy levels to help achieve your overall health goals. Recommendations are practical, specific, and designed to work within your actual life, no overwhelming meal plans here!
3. Targeted Supplementation
When food alone isn't sufficient, our Clinical Nutritionists prescribe professional-grade supplements with precision. Recommendations are customised to your preferences to ensure they are integrated seamlessly into your daily routine.
4. FUNCTIONAL & PATHOLOGY TESTING
Where clinically indicated, advanced diagnostics can uncover what's really driving your symptoms, from micronutrient panels and iron studies to gut microbiome testing and hormone assessment. Insight drives precision in nutrition.
5. Accountability & Ongoing Support
Healing takes time. Regular follow-ups ensure your plan evolves with your progress, and you'll leave every session with clear, practical steps to implement straight away.
6. Collaborative Care
As part of the Papaya team, your nutritionist works alongside naturopaths, pelvic health physios, acupuncturists, and other practitioners to ensure every aspect of your health is addressed. Seeing one is seeing all, and most women’s health conditions benefit from our multidisciplinary approach.

Both modalities support health through diet and lifestyle, but their toolkits differ. A Clinical Nutritionist focuses specifically on nutritional medicine: food, dietary patterns, and targeted supplementation, alongside lifestyle interventions. A Naturopath also incorporates herbal medicine, and other therapies such as iridology. At Papaya, both practitioners collaborate where needed, so you benefit from both disciplines working together.
-
Yes! And it is one of the most impactful times to prioritise yours and your baby’s nutrition. Any recommendations made during these stages are carefully tailored to be safe and appropriate for both of you.
-
No referral is needed. You can book directly online. If you have existing pathology results or reports from other practitioners, we encourage you to bring these along as they give us a useful head start.
-
This depends on your goals. For more straightforward concerns, many clients feel meaningfully supported after 2–3 sessions. For longer-term goals, such as preconception planning, pregnancy, or managing a chronic condition, a care plan of monthly sessions over 3–6 months is more typical, with ongoing check-ins as needed.
-
Functional testing and prescription supplements are separate to your consultation fee and always optional. Testing typically ranges between $300–$800 (inclusive of a report and plan), and prescription supplements will vary depending on the nutrient prescribed. These are recommended only when clinically appropriate, and can always be adjusted based on your needs and budget.
-
Absolutely. Clinical nutrition complements conventional medicine. We regularly collaborate with GPs, obstetricians, and other healthcare providers to ensure your care is cohesive and well-aligned.
