What if painful periods aren’t just “part of being a woman”?
One of the things we see a lot as acupuncturists is period pain and other menstrual concerns. Period pain can range from mild and uncomfortable to debilitating. At Papaya, we work with women across that whole spectrum, because nobody deserves to have their pain go unacknowledged and everyone deserves a symptom-free period.
Why we normalise period pain (& why we shouldn’t)
Many women come to accept PMS, painful or irregular periods as normal, because their symptoms have been dismissed or minimised for years by doctors, well-meaning friends and family, or simply by the cultural message that periods are just supposed to hurt.
We're here to tell you: you don't have to put up with them. Intense period symptoms aren't normal, even if they're common. If your period is disruptive to your work, your relationships, or your day-to-day life, that's a sign something underlying needs addressing, not something to push through and ignore.
What “good” actually looks like
There's nothing we love more than hearing a patient say, "My period just came and I didn't even realise it was coming!" No warning signs, no week of cramping or mood swings beforehand. Or, "I didn't need to take any painkillers this month!"
Sounds like a dream? It shouldn't be. This is what a normal period looks and feels like.
What does the research say about acupuncture for period pain?
Acupuncture has been used extensively to treat period pain, and a growing body of research suggests it may:
Shorten the duration and intensity of period pain (Li, 2023. et al.,)
Prevent the regrowth of endometrial lesions after laparoscopic surgery (Ai, 2025. et al.,)
Improve quality of life and IVF outcomes for those with endometriosis (Ai, 2025. et al.,)
How does acupuncture actually work for improving menstrual pain?
Acupuncture appears to interact with the hormonal and nervous systems to help regulate the menstrual cycle. It may also help reduce prostaglandins which are a circulating marker linked to inflammation in the body, and one that's strongly associated with menstrual cramping.
Relief is possible. Sometimes we just need to dig a little deeper and really listen to what your body is trying to tell you.
And the Best Part Is, We Work Alongside Conventional Treatment for the Best Results
Acupuncture doesn't have to replace what you're already doing, it can support it.
Before and after endometriosis surgery, acupuncture treatment may help improve recovery time and reduce the risk of relapse.
Alongside hormonal contraception, acupuncture can work in tandem to help further ease pain and manage side effects.
Whatever your treatment path looks like, we can help make it work better for you.
