Mother Warming moxa for recovery postpartum
Recovery from birth is an important part of what we do here at Papaya clinic. One of the ways that we can support mothers following childbirth is our mother warming sessions with our acupuncturists.
Mother warming sessions are one off moxibustion (moxa) sessions with our acupuncturists. This nurturing treatment is used to warm the body and support healing in the early post-partum period.
The mother warming session is typically done between 5-14 days following birth. It involves the burning of a herb, called Ai Ye or mugwort, on or near the skin of the lower abdomen and lower back.
This is a Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment that facilitates the closing of the meridians (energy pathways around the body), warming the uterus and supporting the new mother in her energy recovery and vitality in the postpartum period. Moxa has also been shown by research to enhance healing through increasing the production of red and white blood cells in the body.
Mother Warming Moxa:
- Boosts energy
- Enhances healing
- Improves circulation of blood to support pain relief and recovery
- Regulates the nervous system to ease stress
The beautiful thing about moxibustion is that it can be given in the clinic, or we can teach you and your partner to do the treatment at home. This way you can either attend the clinic following birth, or you can get your partner to do it for you at home.
Following this treatment, if the mother needs more support for healing, acupuncture and herbal medicine can be recommended in the coming weeks.
If this sounds like support you would love following giving birth, come and see us in clinic before you give birth or book a mother warming session today.
If you are further along post-partum it is never too late to support your body with moxa. Postpartum care can start from where you are, and we can use these tools to warm your body, boost your energy and promote healing at any stage of the process.
